Nemo’s well know Turtles..Crush and Squirt !

Many of the crew on Pet Starship are fans of the Pixar movie Finding Nemo. Then no doubt most of you are familiar with this famous turtle duo. Crush and his son Squirt. They are green sea turtles that ride the East Australian Current with a surfer dude flair. We always loved when Crush used words like “gnarly” and “dude” as he gave advice to Nemo’s dad Marlin on how to raise children. Squirt speaks with the same surfer lingo as his dad Crush, but with a cute juvenile voice befitting his young age

Dr. Seuss’ Yertle the Turtle

Dr Seuss has always been one of the most popular books on our ship when it comes to kids.

Most likely one of the most recognized and well known turtles of our time is Yertle the Turtle from a book of the same name by good ole Dr. Seuss. The story of Yertle the Turtle dates back to the late 1950’s in a time when life was easy and less stressful. It is the story of a turtle named Yertle who proclaims himself king of the pond. He is soon dissatisfied with the small stone that serves as his throne and stands instead atop his subjects to reach greater heights. Yertle soon attains a vast kingdom by standing atop his turtle tower and ruling over those all below. Though In the end, the turtle at the very bottom of the stack lets out a BURP and the stack of turtles falls, leaving Yertle in the mud.
Some facts that people may not know about Yertle is that Dr. Seuss originally created him as a representation of Adolf Hitler. Amazing right? Yertle’s desire for more and more power and control was like Hitler’s ever growing regime all over Germany. Likewise, Yertle’s topple from power represents Hilter’s rule overturned.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Ever since the early 1980’s the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have enjoyed widespread popularity. Originally based on a comic strip, the Ninja Turtles have also appeared in a cartoon series, movies, various videogames, and as action figures.

Their story is one that takes place in the sewers of New York City where as tiny turtles they came into contact with a mysterious substance called Ooze. The substance caused the turtles to mutate into very giant turtles that can walk upright, talk, and also eat pizza. The 4 turtles become students of the martial arts, trained in ninjutsu by a rat named Splinter. The Ninja Turtles use their skills to fight criminals and battle aliens who lurk in the streets of New York City. Each Turtle has a unique personality and various strengths and skills.

Leonardo
Named after the famous inventor, not the actor, Leonardo da Vinci.Leonardo the Ninja Turtle is the courageous leader of the foursome. Because he is such a devoted student of martial arts, he is also the most skilled fighter of the 4 turtles and often takes charge in perilous situations. Leo wields a pair of ninja swords and wears a blue mask.

Michelangelo
Most often called Mike or Mikey, this talented Ninja Turtle is named after the famous sculptor and painter Michelangelo Buonarroti. Mikey is the most easy going and fun loving turtle. He always provided much of the comic relief in the stories and is adventurous and creative. Michelangelo wears and orange mask and wields a pair of nunchaku.

Donatello
Donatello is also named after a famous artist/sculptor of the Renaissance era. Donatello is the least violent of the 4 turtles, preferring to turn to knowledge and intelligence to solve problems. He is particularly skilled in science and technology. When he does need to fight, he wields a bo staff and wears a purple mask.

Raphael
Raphael is considered the “bad boy” of the bunch. He is an agressive fighter and wields a pair of sai and wears a red mask. Although he can be sarcastic, he is also very loyal to his brothers and sensei. He was named after the famous Italian painter and architect Raphael Sanzio da Urbino.

The Slow moving Tortoise and the Speedy Hare

As the Pet Starship moves from Planet to planet we find that most children are familiar with the famous tortoise from Aesop’s fable The Tortoise and the Hare. In the fable, the tortoise is harshly ridiculed by the hare for being slow. When the tortoise sternly claims he could win a race, the hare takes him up on the idea and challenges him to a race but not just any race.

As the story goes, the hare is so confident that he will win that he lazily lounges around while the tortoise plods along ever so slowly. The hare is certain he can easily catch up at the last minute and zoom across the finish line for the win. In the end of course the hare misjudges the tortoise’s progress and arrives at the finish line only to find out that the tortoise has already arrived and won the race. The saying “slow and steady wins the race” comes from this tale. This is a wonderful story that all Children and Adults should know by heart.
